Analysis of NIRF Management Ranking 2018. Surprises explained

HRD Ministry released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2018 in 9 categories - Management, Engineering, Medical, Law and Architecture. IIM Ahmedabad retains top position among the Indian b-schools.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for year 2018.  In the latest edition of NIRF Management ranking, a total of 12 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) were able to feature among the top 50, whereas IIM Ahmedabad retained the top position.  5 IITs and BHU too were able to secure top ranks.

You can read our article, "NIRF India Rankings 2018: IIM Ahmedabad retains its top position" to read the complete list of NIRF Management Ranking 2018.

As always, there were some surprises in the latest edition of NIRF Management ranking. Before we analyze such surprises, it is important to understand the mechanism that the HRD ministry utilizes in order to rank the institutes.

Evaluation Parameters –

The ministry does not only look at the placement and salaries to come up with the NIRF rankings. In fact, this is a complex evaluation of several parameters grouped under five (5) major parameters, which also includes institute perception.

TLR - Teaching, Learning & Resources

* Student Strength (incl. PhD students)

* Faculty Student ratio (emphasis on permanent faculty)

* Faculty with PhD and Experience

* Total Budget and its Utilisation

RPC - Research and Professional Practice

* Publications; Quality of Publications

* IPR and Patents - Filed, Published, Granted and Licensed

* Projects and Professional Practice; Executive Development Programs

GO - Graduation Outcomes

* % students placed, opting for higher-education, and entrepreneurship

* University Examinations

* Median Salary

* Students admitted into top universities; Number of Ph.D. students graduated

OI - Outreach and Inclusivity

* Students' regional diversity

* Percentage of Women

* Economically and Socially challenged students

* Facilities for Physically Challenged students

PR - Perception

* Peer Perception: Employers and Research Investors

* Peer Perception: Academics

* Public Perception

* Competitiveness

Through our analysis we found that each parameter has the following contribution (weightage) to the Overall score -

TLR

RPP

GO

OI

PR

~10%

~40%

~10%

~35%

~5%

That means, any institute scoring high on RPR (Research and Professional Practice) and OI (Outreach and Inclusivity) (combined weightage of around 75%) will rank much higher in the rankings.  It may also be seen that the Graduation Outcome (GO) and Perception (PR) have just about 15% weightage in the Overall ranking.

The table below presents individual scores of each institute, for each parameter.  Please understand that the scores are not absolute scores, rather they are relative scores against the top institute in each category.   For example, IIM Ahmedabad tops the TLR (Teaching, Learning & Resources) ranking, IIT Delhi tops the RPC (Research and Professional Practice) ranking and IIM Bangalore tops the GO (Graduation Outcomes) ranking, Lovely Professional University tops the OI (Outreach and Inclusivity) and IIM Bangalore tops the PR (Perception) rankings.   The other institutes scores are relative to these topper institutes.

Now, let us look at how each b-school scored on the various parameters –

Explaining surprises -

IIT Roorkee ranked higher than XLRI:  IIT Roorkee has very high RPR score than XLRI’s and almost similar OI score. So, despite having relatively low GO, PR and TLR scores than XLRI’s, IIT Roorkee was able to stay 'slightly' ahead of XLRI in the NIRF 2018 ranking.

Great Lakes (GLIM), Chennai ranked higher than SPJIMR, Mumbai:  GLIM’s TLR score is much higher than SPJIMR's. Also, the institute has higher OI score, and similar RPC, and PR scores than SPJIMr’s .  So, despite having lower GO score than SPJIMR’s, GLIM was ranked higher than SPJIMR.

ICFAI Hyderabad ranked higher than IIFT:  ICFAI has similar TLR and similar GO scores as IIFT’s, while has slightly higher RPC, and much higher OI scores. Although, ICFAI has much lower PR score than IIFT, this interplay of weightages of various parameters gave ICFAI enough push to beat not only IIFT, but also IIM Shillong and NMIMS.

Anna University ranked higher than IIM Ranchi:  Anna University’s TLR score is lower than IIM Ranchi’s, but the former beats the latter hands down in RPC score. Thus, despite IIM Ranchi scoring much higher in GO, it is ranked 12 places below Anna University.

LPU ranked higher than IIM Ranchi:  As mentioned earlier too, LPU is ranked #1 on the OI parameter. Also, on RPC parameters, LPU has outscored IIM Ranchi by 10 points. Therefore, LPU is ranked #38, while IIM Ranchi is ranked #40.

A total of 487 B-schools participated in the NIRF Ranking 2018.  However, some of the known names were missing, including Goa Institute of Management, SCMHRD Pune, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), MICA - The School of Ideas, TISS Mumbai, SIIB Pune and NIRMA University.  Others, participated but could not be ranked, for example TAPMI, Manipal.
