Top B-schools are taking definitive steps to improve diversity in the MBA class

Imagine a girl enter a room full of boys! Imagine a doctor enter a room full of Engineers! Imagine it happening each day for 2 years! Diversity issue is real in Indian B-schools. And some top B-schools are now trying to change all that. Read on.

Achieving healthy gender diversity in a management class has been a long standing issue that business schools in India are now finally, albeit slowly, starting to address.  It is no secret that an MBA classroom is usually a man’s world.  It is also an Engineer’s world in the MBA classroom. While, it is a given that engineers will form the majority of the MBA class in India, the representation of non-Engineers is worrisome.

As we reported in our previous article, “Top 2-Year programs in India at a glance”, the top 50 B-schools have only 28% women in their class. Also, the non-Engineers form only 18% of the class.

It is a known fact that you learn as much from your peers as your Professors in b-school. So, it is important to have diversity – both gender and education – in an MBA class, which can help offset some of your weaknesses, and beef up your skill sets.

Why is diversity important?

As able managers, one must learn that several factors affect the decision making process, and that the way in which a person approaches a problem and arrives at a decision, is not the only way. Being around the people, who are different from you, you can reduce several of your decision-making biases. Case is strong that such an environment helps foster this type of understanding, and personal development.

Let us have a look in to how some of the top b-schools have taken definitive steps in achieving gender and educational diversity in their MBA classroom –
